Beat the Heat with Portable Air Conditioning Units
For those of us who simply can’t afford full fixed air conditioning, portable air conditioning units are the next best thing.
Having lived for several years now in what is considered to be a subtropical climate, the very worst thing about living without air conditioning in the heat of summer is when the temperature is still 110F at 4am.
Sleeping is difficult, and while a fan helps, it does tend to blow hot air which is not ideal. I have been known to get up and shower in the middle of the night, just to cool off.
Then I bought myself a mobile air conditioning unit. It’s great. It’s fitted with castors so I can move it from room to room, although I prefer to have it in my bedroom only.
Rooms can be kept fairly cool simply by closing the shutters all day and not allowing the sunlight, and therefore the heat, to enter.
Bedrooms tend to be upstairs in a house, under the eaves, where the heat convects through the roof beams, even with the shutters closed over the windows.
Portable air conditioning units work by extracting the hot air in a room, running it over an integrated coolant, and expelling the cooled air into the room while the hot air, which has turned to moisture, is vented away.
You can place a mobile air conditioning unit anywhere in your home, but it must be near a window in order to vent.
You can buy types of units that do not vent, but you will need to empty the water containers on a fairly frequent basis.
This may suit you better if your living space does not have windows, or if you prefer to keep your windows closed – to keep out mosquitoes for example.
Modern portable air conditioning units are designed to be practical, attractive to look at and small enough to be easily stored when not in use.
Many come with a timer to let you set when you want your air conditioning unit to come on, or go off.
Most are simplicity itself to set up, and come with a sensor to let you set your desired room temperature.
Modern mobile air conditioning unitswork quickly and efficiently, and some can to be set to fan only, or dehumidify only and so have many uses other than air cooling.
While they are fairly expensive to run, mobile air conditioning units are more economical than full air conditioning because you only cool the area you want cooled, and not the whole house.
Beat the heat this summer. Buy yourself a portable air conditioning unit.
